Montpellier’s most beautiful squares, for two
From the Comédie to the Canourgue, discover Montpellier’s most beautiful squares for a romantic stroll amongst terraces and heritage.
Guide prepared by the VÉNUSA team, welcoming guests in the heart of Montpellier.

In Montpellier, couple life unfolds in its squares. An espresso on a terrace in the morning, an ice cream in the shade mid-afternoon, the golden evening bustle stretching shadows across the cobblestones: these are the natural settings for a successful romantic stroll. Every square featured here is just a few minutes’ walk from our private jacuzzi suites, in the heart of the Écusson.
Place de la Comédie: the unmissable meeting place
Place de la Comédie is the beating heart of Montpellier. Surrounded by buildings with Haussmann-style façades and bustling large terraces, it concentrates the energy of the whole city. During the day, the square moves to the rhythm of passers-by, musicians and families. As night falls, the lighting brings out the pale façades and gives the whole setting a more romantic character.
For a visiting couple, this is naturally where any stroll begins. You meet here, choose a terrace and simply watch the world go by. Our Comédie suite is just moments away: ideal if you would like to walk back after an evening in the square.
Practical tip: during the week, the square is quieter than at weekends; you will find it easier to get a terrace table away from the footfall.
Place Royale du Peyrou: sunset overlooking the city
The Peyrou is one of France’s most beautiful urban promenades. This elevated esplanade, lined with trees and overlooked by the equestrian statue of Louis XIV, offers uninterrupted views across Montpellier’s rooftops and, on a clear day, the outline of Pic Saint-Loup to the north.
For a couple, the Peyrou comes into its own in the late afternoon. The low sunset light warms the stone, the avenues gradually become quieter, and the atmosphere turns softer and more intimate. It is also the starting point for a walk towards the Saint-Clément aqueduct, which you can follow until the coolness of its arches is felt even in the height of summer.
There are no particular addresses to recommend here: simply space, views and the tranquillity of an evening that feels outside time.
Place Sainte-Anne: calm in the heart of the Écusson
Tucked away in the maze of streets in the Écusson, Place Sainte-Anne is one of those squares you discover by chance and find hard to leave. Human in scale, surrounded by cafés and a handful of restaurants, it embodies the neighbourhood spirit of the old town: neither overly touristy nor overly secluded.
For a romantic pause during a walk through the medieval lanes, Sainte-Anne is perfect. The architecture of the surrounding buildings, the cobblestones, the closely set terraces: everything invites you to slow down. It is one of the stops we most enjoy suggesting to guests who wish to explore Montpellier beyond its main thoroughfares.
Place de la Canourgue: the best-kept secret
If you were to remember just one square for its romantic character, it would be this one. Place de la Canourgue is the most secluded of the Écusson’s squares: a green rectangle surrounded by old façades, with benches beneath the trees and an atmosphere that seems almost suspended in time.
Few tourists know it. Those who discover it return. It is a square made for sitting, talking and doing nothing in particular. The light filters through differently at every hour, while the trees shield it from the sounds of the surrounding bustle. Our absolute favourite for a peaceful moment together.
Place Jean-Jaurès: everyday bustle
Place Jean-Jaurès is the centre of gravity for the lively district of the same name. Terraces follow one another, the tram passes through, and people cross paths at every hour. It is a vibrant, cheerful square, with an atmosphere very different from those of the Écusson: more down-to-earth, more spontaneous.
For a couple, it is an ideal stop for lunch or dinner on a terrace, choosing from the venues that line the square. In the evening, the energy rises another notch and the place takes on a festive feel. Our Jean-Jaurès suite is in this district: if you enjoy sleeping in the heart of the action, it is your ideal base for a romantic weekend in Montpellier.
Place Saint-Roch: dining, drinks and a vaulted cellar
The Saint-Roch district is known for its restaurants and wine bars. The square itself is a natural gathering point in the evening: people come here for an aperitif, dinner or to extend the evening on a terrace. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, with a loyal local clientele.
Our Saint-Roch suite is hidden directly beneath it, quite literally, in a 17th-century vaulted cellar. After an evening on a terrace in the square, descending into this suite with its exposed stonework is an experience in itself: an unusual night in a vaulted cellar in Montpellier that few travellers have the chance to enjoy.
Planning your stroll: a few guideposts
Montpellier is a compact city. All the squares listed here are connected by walks of less than twenty minutes. Here is a natural way to link them together for a stroll as a couple:
- Start at Place de la Comédie in the late afternoon, for its bustle.
- Head up towards the Peyrou for sunset; make this your priority if you are there on a fine evening.
- Make your way back down into the Écusson through the lanes, passing Sainte-Anne and la Canourgue.
- Finish around Jean-Jaurès or Saint-Roch for dinner, depending on your suite.
The whole route can be done in light clothes, without a car or a schedule. It is one of Montpellier’s true luxuries: everything is there, accessible and on a human scale.
