Old Montpellier, the Écusson, is a maze of medieval lanes largely given back to pedestrians. You wander between stone façades, you sit down at a terrace, you walk home after dinner. It is a rare luxury in a city: no traffic beneath the windows, no horns, the silence of a district you cross on foot.

That charm comes with one consequence, and it is very simple to plan for: none of our suites has private parking, and you do not drive up to the front door. This is not a shortcoming. It is the very condition of the calm you are coming for. The logic fits in a sentence: you leave the car once, you set down your bags, and you discover the city on foot.

Where to Leave the Car: The Public Car Parks in the Centre

Montpellier is very well equipped with covered, supervised public car parks, spread all around and inside the Écusson. Several of them are a few minutes' walk from our suites. The principle is the same everywhere: you drop your things as close as the street allows for the length of a stop, you drive on to the car park, then you walk back at your own pace.

A few practical pointers, all worth checking at the time of your stay:

• Book your space in advance when the car park offers it. It is often simpler, sometimes better value, and it spares you circling on a weekend or festival evening.
• Note the exact address of the car park before you set off, along with that of your suite: your GPS will guide you to the car park entrance, not into the pedestrian lanes.
• Allow for the walk between the car park and the suite: a few minutes, luggage in hand or on wheels, over cobbles in places.

Depending on the operator, some car parks offer "night" or "24-hour" rates that suit a stay well: a detail worth a close look, and one that can bring down the cost of a weekend. Our three addresses are all in the hypercentre, a few minutes' walk from the car parks, but each has its own orientation. It makes no difference to where you park, which is always a public car park, though it does help you aim for the right part of town.

• The Comédie suite sits steps from place de la Comédie and the Esplanade: aim for the car parks on that side of the Écusson, the liveliest.
• The Jean Jaurès suite sits at the heart of the district, near place Jean Jaurès: the nerve centre, well served by underground parking.
• The Saint-Roch suite is a few minutes' walk from the station, an added advantage if you arrive by train rather than by car.

That last point deserves a word: coming to Montpellier without a car is entirely doable. The station is right in the centre, and from Saint-Roch as from the other suites, everything afterwards happens on foot. If you can, the train spares you the parking question altogether.
