Montpellier in 2 days: a walking itinerary for your weekend

Two days in Montpellier leave time for the historic centre, a cultural visit and an evening together. Group stops by area: the Écusson and Peyrou on the first day, then Musée Fabre and, if time allows, Antigone the next day.

This is a suggested route to shorten according to your arrival time and how much walking you want. It does not assume two full days in the city. Visits, meals and transport are arranged separately; check opening information for your dates.

Your itinerary at a glance

• Day 1, before lunch: Place de la Comédie, the streets of the Écusson and the Saint-Roch neighbourhood.
• Day 1, after lunch: Canourgue, the area around Saint-Pierre, then either the Jardin des Plantes or Peyrou, depending on time.
• Evening: check in, have dinner and choose one activity, leaving time to enjoy your accommodation too.
• Day 2: Musée Fabre after opening, or a walk towards Antigone and the Lez; combine them only if your departure allows it.

The official Montpellier tourist map helps you locate the stops. This route limits changes between neighbourhoods; allow for paving, slopes and distances according to your mobility.

Day 1: from the Comédie to the streets of the Écusson

Begin on Place de la Comédie to get your bearings before entering the streets of the historic centre. Head towards Saint-Roch for a first walk, then choose a café or lunch stop. Keep indoor visits to places whose access arrangements you have checked: walking past a church or monument does not mean being able to enter at any hour.

Continue towards Place de la Canourgue and the area around Saint-Pierre Cathedral. The atmosphere changes between squares and narrower lanes, and the route benefits from pauses. If you arrive in the early afternoon, begin after lunch and select fewer stops. You can leave the Comédie or Saint-Roch for an evening walk, depending on where you stay.

Jardin des Plantes or Peyrou: choose according to the time

The Jardin des Plantes is near Saint-Pierre, making this the logical point to include it. The University of Montpellier lists public opening Tuesday to Sunday from noon: until 8 pm from 1 June to 30 September, and until 6 pm from 1 October to 31 May. It is closed on Mondays and to independent visitors in the morning. Check exceptional closures before visiting. Picnics are not allowed, so plan lunch elsewhere.

The other option is to reach the triumphal arch and then the Peyrou promenade. The esplanade and view towards the aqueduct offer another perspective on the centre. Check access hours, especially for a late-afternoon visit. You can combine the garden and Peyrou if you have time, but either one is enough to round off the walk.

Your first evening: leave time to settle in

Plan to check in before dinner if you are staying overnight. At VÉNUSA, standard arrival begins at 5 pm; an earlier arrival must be confirmed. Booking a night does not automatically provide access to the suite or luggage storage in the morning.

Choose a table from our guide to dinner for two, then check service times and reservations directly. If you add a performance, make it the fixed point of the evening and arrange dinner around it.

Day 2: Musée Fabre or Antigone, depending on departure

If you would like a cultural visit

Musée Fabre lists opening Tuesday to Sunday, 11 am to 6 pm. Schedule your visit in the late morning or after lunch. Choose another option on Monday. Consult the official page for exceptional closures, tickets and accessibility updates; arrangements can change.

Choose a collection or exhibition that interests you, then leave time to get out, eat and collect your luggage. The museum restricts large bags and suitcases: do not treat it as a luggage-storage solution before your train.

If you prefer a walk and different architecture

From the Comédie area, head towards Antigone, then continue through its squares to Place de l’Europe beside the Lez. The official neighbourhood guide helps you identify the route and its architectural perspectives.

This is another branch of the visit, east of the centre. If you need to leave early, choose it instead of the museum. For a later train, you can continue after Fabre and lunch if you enjoy walking, allowing enough time to return. The Lez is not a beach: reaching the coast requires a separate journey that would add considerably to this two-day plan.

What to do on Sunday before leaving Montpellier

If you choose Antigone, start with its Sunday-morning farmers’ market. The tourist office lists 8 am–1.30 pm in the Antigone neighbourhood. Check the location and any changes for your date. This fits naturally with a walk towards the Lez, without crossing back to the other side of the centre.

If you prefer Fabre, schedule a visit from 11 am only after resolving luggage arrangements. The museum refuses large suitcases and VÉNUSA check-out is at 11 am: confirm an independent solution if you cannot travel light. For an early train, keep to a walk and a meal with enough time to return. Other Montpellier markets may suit your area; the Arceaux food market is not held on Sunday.

Sunday, Monday or rain: adapt your two days

For Saturday–Sunday, the garden and Fabre fall within their regular opening days, subject to exceptions. Reverse the days if your Sunday train leaves early: visit the museum on Saturday and take a shorter walk on Sunday. The garden’s noon opening makes it less suitable before an early-afternoon departure.

For Sunday–Monday, schedule Fabre or the garden on Sunday. Keep the Écusson and Antigone for Monday, if the weather allows. Do not automatically replace Fabre with another museum: each has its own opening days.

Arrival, luggage and accommodation: settle these before travelling

First, check the station: Montpellier Saint-Roch and Montpellier Sud de France are in different locations. Our train-arrival guide explains the key points. By car, select a car park and the final walk; VÉNUSA suites do not have private parking.

Next, plan luggage arrangements for arrival and departure days. Standard check-out at VÉNUSA is 11 am; leaving bags in the suite afterwards is not automatically available. Confirm a solution before booking a visit that will not accommodate your luggage.
