Things to do as a couple in Montpellier: 7 ideas for two

For a couples' activity in Montpellier, opt for a simple itinerary: a walk at Peyrou, the lanes of the Écusson, a visit to the musée Fabre, a performance at the opera, dinner in the city centre or a day by the coast. A night in a suite with a private jacuzzi then allows you to extend your stay without changing neighbourhoods.

Here are seven ideas arranged by pace and time of day. Opening times and programmes change: official links allow you to check the information before your visit.

1. See the city from the Peyrou promenade

The place Royale du Peyrou is a viewpoint on the edge of the Écusson. The triumphal arch, water tower and aqueduct create a short, free walk that is easy to fit in before dinner.

At the end of the day, the light and open views are what make the site appealing. Do, however, check seasonal closing times, which vary throughout the year.

2. Wander through the Écusson without a set itinerary

From Peyrou, make your way to place de la Canourgue, Sainte-Anne, Jean-Jaurès and then Comédie. This route crosses the historic centre without requiring transport and allows you to stop as you wish: at a gallery, café, bookshop or terrace.

For a first visit, plan fewer stops and allow more time between them. The Écusson is compact; its appeal lies precisely in being able to wander without a rigid plan.

3. Visit the musée Fabre

The musée Fabre is a good option when it is very hot, raining, or when you would like to add a cultural dimension to your stay. Check the temporary exhibitions and opening times on the official website before setting off.

A visit of around two hours still leaves time to reach place de la Comédie, have lunch or continue through the lanes of the city centre.

4. Book an evening at the opera or the Corum

The programme of the Opéra Orchestre national Montpellier includes concerts, operas and performances, held in particular between Opéra Comédie and the Corum. Choose the performance first, then arrange dinner around its timing.

This approach works better than looking for an activity at the last minute, especially on dates when tickets are limited.

5. Choose a romantic restaurant in the city centre

Dinner can be the main activity of the evening. Garden setting, tasting menu, gourmet cuisine or an intimate contemporary dining room: our selection of romantic restaurants in Montpellier compares four atmospheres in the Écusson.

Book directly with the restaurant and check its opening times, menus and ability to accommodate dietary requirements.

6. Devote a day to the coast

The coast lies outside the city centre and requires separate planning. Montpellier Tourisme summarises access to the beaches of the Montpellier coastline, including by public transport.

Choose a beach according to journey time and season, then keep the evening free in Montpellier. This avoids combining the beach, sightseeing and a booked dinner in the same day.

7. Book a suite with a private jacuzzi

To end the itinerary without getting back in the car, the three VÉNUSA suites with private jacuzzis are located in the Écusson. The jacuzzi is incorporated into each suite and remains exclusively for its occupants throughout the stay.

Comédie, Jean-Jaurès and Saint-Roch offer three different architectural settings. Compare the galleries, floor areas and access requirements on the Suites page, then check availability for your dates.

Plan a day for two without overfilling it

A balanced itinerary generally consists of three parts: an outdoor activity, a visit or quiet time, followed by dinner. The jacuzzi and suite make up the final part of the day, with no additional schedule to keep.

If you are arriving by train, our guide to a romantic weekend without a car brings together the simplest ways to get around from Saint-Roch station.

Frequently asked questions about things to do as a couple in Montpellier

Which couples' activity should you choose for a first visit?

Start with Peyrou and the Écusson. These two stops are free, close to one another and provide a clear introduction to the historic centre. Then add the musée Fabre, a performance or dinner according to your tastes.

What can couples do in Montpellier when it rains?

The musée Fabre, an exhibition, a long lunch or a performance are the simplest options. A suite with a private jacuzzi also allows you to enjoy your stay without relying on the weather.

Can you organise your entire stay without a car?

Yes, in the historic centre. The main squares, musée Fabre, Opéra Comédie, the Corum and the VÉNUSA suites are accessible on foot or by tram. The coast, however, requires a specific journey.
